Companies from Japan and member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations have agreed on a series of deals centering on decarbonization, as part of efforts to tackle climate change.
                
Japan&#039;s Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry hosted a forum in Tokyo on Saturday to mark 50 years of friendship between Japan and ASEAN.
                
About 100 people, including business leaders and start-up officials attended the event aimed at strengthening economic cooperation between the two sides.
                
About 70 memorandums of understanding were exchanged as of Saturday, mainly in the fields of decarbonization.
                
Among them is a thermal power plant project in Malaysia that runs on ammonia, which emits no carbon dioxide when burned. It will become the first such plant in the world when it begins operating in 2026.
                
Other deals include providing technical support for carbon neutrality efforts using hydrogen and ammonia at a petrochemical complex in Thailand.
                
A third project will invest in research into a coffee roasting business in Laos that will use hydrogen instead of coal and oil.
                
The governments have also agreed to support each other in compiling a roadmap toward realizing their goals of carbon neutrality. The aim is to encourage investment in decarbonization, which is expected to total around 4,000 trillion yen, or about 28 trillion dollars, in Asia as a whole.
                
Japan&#039;s Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Saito Ken expressed hope for creating projects that will further strengthen ties between Japan and ASEAN and symbolize cooperation between the two sides.
