Hayashi, Blinken discuss Ukraine, China NHK

Japan's Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken have shared the recognition that it is important that countries not provide military support to Russia.

The foreign affairs chiefs talked for about 20 minutes in New Delhi on Friday.

As a year has passed since the start of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the two diplomats agreed to continue sanctions on Russia and support for Ukraine.

They also shared the importance of working on and providing support to emerging and developing economies, collectively known as the Global South. Some of these countries are said to be taking a neutral position on the situation in Ukraine.

The two diplomats also touched on China, agreeing to cooperate in dealing with various matters.

Chinese government ships have repeatedly entered Japan's territorial waters near the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea.

Japan controls the islands. China and Taiwan claim them. The Japanese government maintains the islands are an inherent part of Japan's territory.
