The Chinese government says it will enforce measures to regulate generative artificial intelligence services, starting on August 15. The government said on Thursday that texts, images, videos and other AI-produced contents for people in China must reflect the country's core socialist values. It also said the contents must exclude subversive material and expressions that are discriminatory or infringe on privacy. It added that service providers must delete illicit contents and stop their spread. Violators will be punished and could even be held criminally liable. Chinese authorities have already been rigorously regulating online services. In 2017, major IT company Tencent had to suspend its AI chatbots after they apparently criticized the Chinese Communist Party. Meanwhile, Beijing is encouraging the use of generative AI in a range of areas. Companies such as IT giants Baidu and Alibaba Group are accelerating competition to develop generative artificial intelligence services.
