A Japanese NGO working in Cambodia has completed construction of a children's hospital that will examine and treat kids for free.
Japan Heart built the hospital in the suburbs of the capital Phnom Penh using corporate and private donations. The NGO has had a presence in Cambodia since 2009.
Founder Yoshioka Hideto spoke at an inauguration ceremony Friday, saying, "As long as we can save lives, we will continue to move forward." He added that he hopes that "the experience and learning at this hospital will spread across the entire country of Cambodia and Asia."
Cambodian Health Minister Chheang Ra said the hospital represents a special bond between his country and Japan. He said it will help Cambodia to pursue its policy of universal health coverage.
The 200-bed hospital will also specialize in pediatric cancer. It will eventually have a staff of 200, including 40 people from Japan.
There are hopes the facility will aid with the continuing recovery of Cambodia's healthcare system. Medical care was decimated by the genocidal regime of Pol Pot, which murdered many of the country's doctors and other intellectuals in the late 1970s.
