Myanmar's acting president has signed a state of emergency every six months since February 2021, when the junta seized power. But he's now on medical leave. So the head of the military now fills those shoes, and his own. State media say Senior General Min Aung Hlaing will take over the duties of Myint Swe. The report says the acting president is currently unable to serve the National Defense and Security Council. State of emergencies need the approval of the president, and the next deadline is due at the end of July. Min Aung Hlaing is now on course to extend the measure himself. The junta has promised to hold a general election when the turbulence in Myanmar subsides. The vote cannot take place under a state of emergency.
