Strong typhoon approaching central and western Japan NHK

A strong typhoon is moving north over the Pacific Ocean near Japan's Ogasawara Islands.

Typhoon Lan is still far from the Japanese main island of Honshu, but high waves, strong winds and heavy rain are forecasted.

The typhoon is expected to make landfall between the Tokai region in central Japan and the Shikoku region in western Japan sometime on Tuesday.

The Meteorological Agency said as of 6 p.m. Saturday, the storm was slowly moving west-northwest over waters 230 kilometers north of Chichijima Island.

It has a central atmospheric pressure of 950 hectopascals and winds of up to 162 kilometers per hour near its center with maximum gusts of 216 kilometers per hour.

Winds of more than 90 kilometers per hour are blowing within a 110-kilometer radius from the center.

Although Typhoon Lan is moving away from the Ogasawara Islands, weather officials are calling on residents to stay on the alert for high waves and landslides as heavy rains have loosened the ground.

Waves up to nine meters high and strong winds are expected to hit the Izu Islands on Sunday.

Winds between 72 and 86 kilometers per hour with maximum gusts between 90 and 126 kilometers per hour are expected in the Tokai, Kinki and Shikoku regions from Monday.

Weather officials also forecast up to 200 millimeters of rain in the Tokai region, and up to 150 in the Kanto-Koshin and Kinki regions during the 24 hours up to Monday evening.

The typhoon could disrupt transportation during the annual Bon holiday period.

Weather officials are calling on people to keep up to date on the latest weather forecasts and to be prepared.
