Power-plant operator plans large-scale trial to use ammonia fuel NHK

A Japanese electricity producer is preparing to launch a large-scale trial that will use ammonia as a fuel source at one of its plants.

Jera has unveiled a generator to be used in the experiment at its coal-fired facility in central Japan.

The goal is to replace 20 percent of the plant's fuel with ammonia, which doesn't emit carbon dioxide. The trial involves modifying the company's 1-million-kilowatt-class power generator.

Engineers will check whether the equipment can achieve stable fuel combustion and cut emissions of toxic nitrogen oxide.

Jera says the trial is expected to start as early as March 26. It wants to put the new method into practical use by 2027 or 2028.

Jera is a major electricity producer and a joint venture between Tokyo Electric Power and Chubu Electric Power.
