In the Philippines, families and relatives have mourned alleged victims of the so-called war on drugs led by the country's former president, Rodrigo Duterte. Duterte has now been taken into custody in The Hague to face trial for crimes against humanity. A ceremony to remember a dozen victims was held in Manila on Wednesday. Relatives laid remains of their loved ones to rest at a cemetery. Duterte launched a bloody anti-drug crackdown while in office. He was mayor of Davao in the southern Philippines before serving as the country's president for six years from 2016. The Philippine government says more than 6,000 people died in the campaign. The country's Congress gives a higher number, saying extrajudicial killings exceeded 30,000. Melinda Lafuente, the mother of one of the victims, said, " I just want to let Duterte know that he should just admit all that he has done, his orders to kill, his directives if he told people to kill, because he was really the one who ordered the killing of all the addicts, even non-addicts, and those who sell drugs." The ceremony was held one day after Philippine authorities arrested Duterte in accordance with a warrant issued by the International Criminal Court. Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte has strongly condemned the Marcos administration's arrest of her father. Her office says she has also arrived in the Netherlands. She is reportedly arranging a meeting with him.
