A powerful earthquake struck western Afghanistan on Sunday, leaving one person dead and 35 injured. The US Geological Survey says a magunitude-6.3 quake hit at around 8:06 a.m., local time. That was followed 20 minutes later by another temblor with a magnitude of 5.4. The region has been rocked by multiple quakes in recent days. On October 7, the area was shaken by two magnitude-6.3 quakes. It was hit by another of the same strength four days later. The Taliban interim government said more than 1,000 people have been killed and over 2,000 injured so far. Authorities in Herat, the province most severely affected by earlier quakes, reported one death and 35 injuries from Sunday's jolt. People remain terrified. Some, whose houses are still intact, are sleeping outdoors in fear of more quakes.
