Russia's defense minister hopes for closer ties with North Korea NHK

Russia says its defense minister Andrei Belousov visited North Korea and expressed hope that a recent treaty will help deepen bilateral ties. The move comes after the North sent troops to Russia to fight against Ukraine.

The Russian defense ministry said on Friday that Belousov had talks in Pyongyang with his counterpart No Kwang Chol.

Belousov reportedly said the comprehensive and strategic treaty between their countries will help maintain the balance of power in Northeast Asia.

In June, Russia and North Korea agreed on a pact calling for mutual military assistance if either country is attacked.

Minister No reportedly said Belousov's visit will contribute to boosting both countries' defense and security capabilities.

He also said the visit will be an important moment to exchange constructive proposals for the development of friendship and cooperation between the countries.

Before the talks, a welcoming ceremony was held at an international airport in Pyongyang. A banner at the site showed the phrase: "Full-fledged support and solidarity with the fighting Russian military and people."
