The UN Development Programme estimates that damage from powerful earthquakes that hit southern Turkey and Syria last month will exceed 100 billion dollars in Turkey alone. The UN agency also said on Tuesday that facilities to prepare hot meals for survivors and nursing care homes for the elderly will be needed in affected regions. A magnitude-7.8 quake on February 6 and subsequent tremors have killed about 46,000 people in Turkey and around 6,000 in Syria. The agency plans to appeal for more financial aid at an international donors' conference to be held in Brussels on March 16.
