International efforts are underway to end the nearly two weeks of violence in Sudan. The country's military says it is ready to accept a ceasefire extension proposal, but the rival Rapid Support Forces has yet to respond to the offer. Gun battles have continued even after the 72-hour truce took effect from the start of Tuesday. The two sides have accused each other of violating the ceasefire agreement. The Sudanese military announced on Wednesday that it gave an initial approval for a proposal to extend the ceasefire for another 72 hours from Thursday midnight. The offer was made by Kenya and other eastern African countries. The military also approved a proposal to send a special envoy to neighboring South Sudan for talks with the RSF. In a statement on Thursday, the RSF blamed the military for carrying out airstrikes and artillery attacks on its camp. It made no reference to the proposed ceasefire extension. Sudan's health authorities say that at least 512 people have been killed since violence erupted on April 15.
