US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has arrived in South Korea for talks over strengthening deterrence to respond to threats from North Korea.
                
Austin arrived at Osan Air Base in the suburbs of Seoul on Monday afternoon.
                
He is scheduled to meet South Korean Defense Minister Lee Jong-sup on Tuesday to discuss how to deal with North Korea, which appears set to accelerate its nuclear and missile development programs.
                
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said in an address last month that the country needs to mass-produce tactical nuclear weapons and exponentially increase production of nuclear warheads.
                
The US and South Korean defense chiefs are expected to discuss boosting what is called &quot;extended deterrence.&quot; That is a US military commitment to protect its allies with nuclear and other weapons. The chiefs are expected to display Washington&#039;s ironclad commitment to regional stability.
                
The United States and South Korea plan to hold joint simulation drills next month under the scenario of a nuclear threat from the North. The two sides are expected to discuss concrete steps to enhance deterrence.
