The semiconductor industry is shaping up as a major battleground between rival powers, the US and China. And government officials in Japan want to make sure their own economy is protected from any fallout. On Tuesday they announced a plan to ramp up investment in local chip-making operations. Industry ministry officials say the goal is to triple sales from Japan's semiconductor and related industries by 2030, to 15 trillion yen. That's more than 100 billion dollars. They say the focus should be on developing the technology needed to make advanced chips. The plan will require more than 70 billion dollars in investment over the next decade. Officials say that money will come from both the public and private sectors. Separately, they say they plan to encourage the development of generative AI systems such as ChatGPT, which are rapidly transforming the way people work.
