Ukraine's environment minister says Russia's invasion has caused more than 2,200 cases of environmental damage and released a large amount of climate warming gases. Ukrainian Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Minister Ruslan Strilets held a news conference on Monday at the COP27 climate change conference venue in Egypt. Strilets said the damage of soil and air pollution amounts to about 36 billion dollars. He also said Russian attacks have led to emissions of at least 33 million tons of greenhouse gases. He estimated that an additional 49 million tons of emissions are expected to be produced by reconstruction efforts. He added that Russia should bear the responsibility for the emissions. The minister urged Moscow to immediately halt the invasion. He said the war has not only destroyed the environment but also children's future. Earlier on Monday, Strilets met with Japan's Environment Minister Nishimura Akihiro and asked for support from Japan as the country has a lot of experience in the environmental field. Nishimura said Russia's invasion is extending severe environmental impacts. He expressed his intention to develop bilateral cooperation in the field of environmental protection in Ukraine. Japan and Ukraine plan to discuss specific ways to cooperate, such as disposing of debris caused by the Russian attacks.
