The Japanese government is arranging to host a meeting of foreign ministers from Japan, China and South Korea in Tokyo on March 22 to boost trilateral cooperation in a range of areas. It also plans to hold separate Japan-China talks to discuss pending issues between the two countries. The foreign ministerial meeting will be attended by Japan's Iwaya Takeshi, China's Wang Yi and South Korea's Cho Tae-yul. The ministers are expected to discuss how to step up cooperation in areas including human exchanges, economic cooperation and measures to cope with the declining birthrate. Also on the agenda will be discussions on arranging a trilateral summit later this year. On the sidelines of the event, the government plans to hold two-way talks between the Japanese and Chinese foreign ministers. It also plans to arrange a high-level economic dialogue between Japan and China joined by relevant ministers from both sides. It would be the first such meeting in about six years since the last one held in Beijing in 2019. The government is hoping the Japan-China talks will serve as an opportunity to resolve pending issues between the two countries, including China's import suspension of Japanese fishery products.
