The US State Department has criticized Russia for alleged war crimes in Ukraine in its annual report on human rights practices. It has also slammed China for what it calls genocide in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The State Department on Monday released its 2022 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices that covers 198 countries and territories around the world. The report says that since Russia began its invasion of Ukraine, its armed forces committed numerous war crimes and other atrocities, including summary execution and torture. The paper also notes that there were numerous reports of forced deportations and adoptions of children from Ukraine. Regarding China, the report says that "genocide and crimes against humanity occurred during last year against predominantly Muslim Uyghurs and members of other ethnic and religious minority groups in Xinjiang." It says the crimes continuing in the region include the arbitrary imprisonment or other deprivation of physical liberty of more than one million civilians, forced sterilization and coerced abortions. Speaking to reporters, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that the report makes clear that in 2022, people in countries across each region continued to see a backsliding in human rights conditions and disrespect for fundamental human dignity.
