Japan is set to resume making financial contributions to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees. Foreign Minister Kamikawa Yoko told reporters on Tuesday that Japan will lift the suspension it imposed on the provision of funds, and start giving support again, as UNRWA has improved its governance. She said "the humanitarian situation in Palestine is critical" and the agency's involvement in the distribution of humanitarian aid is essential. Japan suspended funding in January after allegations surfaced that some members of UNRWA's staff were involved in Hamas's attack on Israel in October. The ministry says Japan will give the agency about 35 million dollars as soon as preparations have been made. The money was allocated in last fiscal year's supplementary budget. Kamikawa met the commissioner-general of UNRWA, Philippe Lazzarini, in Tokyo last week. They confirmed that Japan will receive regular reports on how funds are being used under a new framework.
