Tokyo's daily COVID cases fall below 1,000 for first time since June 2022 NHK

Japan's health ministry confirmed 799 new cases of the coronavirus in Tokyo on Sunday.

That's down 1,488 from a week ago and marks 26 straight days of week-on-week declines.

The daily tally in the capital has fallen below 1,000 for the first time since June 13 last year.

The ministry confirmed 15 deaths. The number of seriously ill patients who are on ventilators or ECMO heart-lung machines stands at 22, unchanged from Saturday.

Nationwide, the ministry confirmed 13,740 cases and 137 fatalities.
