Japan has provided Ukraine with more than a million textbooks to support the country&#039;s education sector amid Russia&#039;s invasion.
                
A ceremony to hand over the textbooks to Ukraine took place Thursday at a school in the city of Irpin near the capital Kyiv. Participants included Japanese and Ukrainian government officials.
                
The Japanese government decided to provide the textbooks at the request of Ukraine. The actual provision was organized by the Japan International Cooperation Agency.
                
The textbooks are on Ukrainian and foreign literature. They will be distributed to fifth graders at about 10,000 schools across Ukraine.
                
Japan&#039;s Ambassador Matsuda Kuninori said Ukraine&#039;s younger generation will play a key role in efforts to reconstruct the country. He added Japan supports Ukraine on its path to recovery and prosperity.
                
Ukraine&#039;s education minister Oksen Lisovyi expressed gratitude for the textbooks. He said Japan was the first country to offer help in 2022, when his country allocated all budgetary resources to the war and left no money for textbooks.
                
Ukrainian students also voiced thanks for the assistance. A 16-year-old said she wants to work at an international company while helping rebuild Ukraine. She also said she wants to visit Japan.
                
An air raid warning prompted some 500 students of the school to temporarily evacuate to a shelter on Thursday.
                
Analysts say securing a safe education environment for students in Ukraine remains a challenge as Russia&#039;s invasion is continuing.
