The leaders of the United States and five other Western nations have reiterated their support for Israel amid its fighting with the Islamic group Hamas. They also urged Israel to adhere to international humanitarian law and protect civilians. The White House announced on Sunday that US President Joe Biden spoke by phone with the leaders of the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy and Canada. In a joint statement issued by the leaders following their meeting, they reiterated their support for Israel and its right to defend itself against terrorism. They called on Israel to minimize damage to residents in the Gaza Strip as it intensified air attacks targeting Hamas strongholds. The leaders welcomed the announcement of the first humanitarian relief convoys reaching Gaza and vowed to continue coordination with partners in the region to ensure stable provisions of food, water, medical care and other assistance to meet humanitarian needs. The leaders also called for the immediate release of all hostages and committed to coordinate closely to support their nationals in the region, particularly those wishing to leave Gaza.
