The Japanese government has lodged a protest with China after a Chinese vessel was apparently conducting a maritime survey in Japan's exclusive economic zone off the southwestern Japanese island of Amami Oshima.
Japan's Foreign Ministry says the coast guard found the Chinese research ship extending what appeared to be a wire into the sea about 334 kilometers west of the island at around 11:20 a.m. on Tuesday.
The ministry says China did not obtain Japan's consent for a survey in the area. The ministry also says it used diplomatic channels to demand that Beijing stop the activity immediately.
