Torrential rain is expected to hit western Japan and some areas along the Pacific coast in eastern Japan from Thursday to Friday. Weather officials are calling on people to remain alert for landslides and other disasters. The Meteorological Agency says a seasonal rain front will move from the south to the north, and a low pressure system will develop on the front on Thursday. The front is being fed by warm and moist air, and is expected to become active. Torrential rainfall and thunder are forecast for western Japan from Thursday morning through Friday, and areas on the Pacific coast in eastern Japan from late Thursday night to Friday. In the 24-hour period through Thursday evening, rainfall of 180 millimeters is forecast in southern Kyushu and 120 millimeters in northern Kyushu. In the following 24-hour period through Friday evening, rainfall of up to 200 millimeters is expected in southern Kyushu, Shikoku, Kinki, Tokai and Kanto-Koshin. Up to 100 millimeters of rain is forecast in northern Kyushu. Rain is expected to intensify again in the areas hit by record rainfall last weekend. Even small amounts of rain can heighten the risk of mudslides. The Meteorological Agency is advising caution against landslides, flooding in low-lying areas and swollen rivers. Officials are urging people to make necessary preparations before the rain intensifies and to listen to the latest weather and evacuation information.
