US return to UNESCO officially approved NHK

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization has approved the United States' request to be reinstated as a member following a five-year absence.

Member states voted on Friday to back the country's return during an extraordinary session at UNESCO's headquarters in Paris.

In 2017, then US President Donald Trump decided to pull his country out of the body. He accused UNESCO of being biased against Israel.

The Trump administration took a clear pro-Israeli stance, and officially withdrew in 2018.
