Iran reports drone attack on military facility NHK

Iran says three small drones attacked one of its military facilities but claims the strike was "unsuccessful."

A statement issued by the Iranian defense ministry says the drone attack occurred in the central province of Isfahan on Saturday.

Footage allegedly taken at the site reveals a flash of light and the sound of an explosion.

Iran's state-run news agency says the drones were destroyed by the facility's air defense system or caught by "defense traps." It says the strike caused minor damage to the facility's roof but no casualties.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian told reporters a cowardly attack was carried out to destabilize Iran. But he did not mention who was behind the strike.

Iran's nuclear facilities have experienced a series of explosions and fires in recent years.

A senior Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps official and a scientist said to be a central figure in the country's nuclear program were also assassinated.

Iran accused Israel of being behind the attacks and assassinations.

The Israeli military refused to comment on the latest drone attack when contacted by NHK.

The Wall Street Journal on Sunday quoted several US officials as saying Israel carried out the strike.

It says the military facility neighbors a site owned by an organization that the United States has sanctioned for its involvement in Iran's ballistic-missile program.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, now on a tour of the Middle East, is scheduled to hold talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu this week.

They are expected to discuss ways to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.
