US think tank: Russia stepping up attacks amid Ukrainian supply shortage NHK

A US think tank says Russian troops are likely intensifying their attacks in Ukraine's east while the Ukrainian military grapples with a shortage of equipment and supplies.

The Institute for the Study of War said on Wednesday that "Russian forces appear to have increased the number and size of mechanized ground assaults on select sectors of the frontline within the past two weeks."

The think tank says the move could be aimed at taking advantage before Ukraine receives Western security assistance.

Reuters news agency quotes a Ukrainian military spokesperson as saying that the situation near Bakhmut in the eastern region of Donetsk has become very difficult.

On Thursday, the CEO of Ukraine's state-run power firm Ukrenergo said Russia has been attacking energy infrastructure on a daily basis since a massive assault using drones and missiles on March 22.
