Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed an interest in having the United States' arms industry and other partners work with Kyiv to manufacture weapons in Ukraine.
Zelenskyy delivered a speech at an international defense industries forum in Kyiv on Saturday. Attendees at the event included officials from US and European military companies.
Zelenskyy said his government is "interested in localizing the production of" defense equipment and cutting-edge defense systems that can be used on the frontline.
He added that Ukraine is already holding negotiations with its partners, so that weapons, equipment and ammunition can be produced in the country.
On the same day, Ukraine's military announced that it had shot down 30 of the 40 Iranian-made drones that Russia launched in an overnight attack on the southern regions of Odesa and Mikolaiv, as well as on the western region of Vinnytsia.
Meanwhile, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell visited the Ukrainian city of Odesa on Saturday. That was the one-year anniversary of Russian President Vladimir Putin's declaration that Moscow was annexing the Ukrainian regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson.
Borrell called the unilateral Russian move illegal, and he denounced Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. He also said that the EU will support Ukraine "in its fight to restore its territorial integrity."
