Ishikawa Prefecture in central Japan says the death toll from the powerful earthquake on New Year's Day has climbed to 215, as of 2 p.m. Friday. The local government says 98 people have been confirmed dead in Suzu City, 83 in Wajima City, 20 in Anamizu Town, six in Noto Town, five in Nanao City, two in Shika Town, and one in Hakui City. Fourteen of the victims are believed to have died from worsening health and other disaster-related causes, after initially evacuating to safety. Officials released a list of 28 people who remain unaccounted for in Wajima, Suzu and Nanao. They are seeking information to confirm their safety. By prefecture, the quake has left at least 577 people injured in Ishikawa, 48 in Niigata, 43 in Toyama, six in Fukui, and one in Gifu.
