Japan's Digital Agency inspected over My Number ID system errors NHK

A third-party organization tasked with protecting personal information in Japan has conducted an inspection of the Digital Agency following a series of errors related to the country's My Number national ID system.

The Personal Information Protection Commission conducted the on-site inspection at the agency on Wednesday. Commission members interviewed agency officials and looked into related materials.

The inspection was prompted by 940 cases of ID numbers being linked to strangers' bank accounts, which are used to receive pension payments and other benefits.

These errors occurred at local government offices that handle residents' applications for My Number cards.

The commission points out that the agency may have failed to take adequate risk-control measures.

Commission members are looking into whether the agency properly instructed local authorities on operating the system and if necessary risk-control measures were in place.

The commission plans to carry out further inspections if necessary. It says it may consider issuing administrative guidance to the agency, depending on its findings.
