Pakistan has secured more than 9 billion dollars in aid from the international community for reconstruction following last year's devastating floods. Pakistan and the United Nations hosted a conference in Geneva, Switzerland, on Monday to discuss the country's rebuilding efforts. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was seeking 8 billion dollars in assistance over the next three years. The Pakistani Foreign Ministry said the 9 billion dollars exceeded its target thanks to support from many international organizations and countries, including France, the United States, China and Japan. Sharif expressed his gratitude on social media, writing that he was "deeply moved by the compassion on display" at the conference. The widespread floods between June and August left at least 1,700 people dead and affected 33 million others. People in flood-damaged areas are still living in evacuation shelters.
