The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force is hosting an exchange program through which it has invited young naval officers from 27 countries to discuss maritime security. The JMSDF Command and Staff College in Tokyo has been organizing the program since 2000. Its aims include seeking deeper understanding of Japan's security policy. This year, 31 lieutenants, lieutenant commanders or equivalent officers from the United States, South Korea, Australia and other countries are taking part. China has sent one officer, as it did last year. At the opening ceremony on Tuesday, college president Egawa Hiroshi said he hopes the officers can share an understanding of the recent international situation, developments in the Indo-Pacific, and the maritime security environment. Egawa called on the participants to build a lasting collaborative relationship with a future-oriented perspective. The officers are due to discuss maritime security and international cooperation. They are also expected to visit MSDF vessels and study Japanese culture. The MSDF says it hopes the program, which runs until October 17, will contribute to promoting international naval cooperation.
