Japan's labor-strapped parcel delivery firms have a plan in mind to reduce the strain on drivers. They aim to reduce redeliveries by having condominium caretakers take custody of parcels for residents. Three delivery companies ran a trial of the system at a condo in Tokyo's Chuo district. The building has about 200 units and up to 150 parcels are delivered there each day. Under the agreement, staff at the condo receive all packages and pass them onto residents. A resident says it's convenient as she can get packs from multiple delivery firms at once. The companies say the system is ideal for buildings where parcel lockers are full and those where security prevents access to individual apartments. An official of Daiwa Lifenext says they'll first focus on large apartments and residential towers but want to also adopt the system for small and mid-sized condos. Condo managers may charge delivery firms a fee for the service, which in turn could raise the wages for caretakers handling parcels.
