The Japanese government has approved a system to ensure a stable supply of items essential to people&#039;s daily lives in times of emergency.
                
Certain items have been designated &quot;critical&quot; products, including semiconductors and storage batteries.
                
The system, approved on Friday, enables the state to temporarily take over factories that make such products. This might be done during outbreaks of infectious disease, or when other countries impose export restrictions.
                
Japanese Economic Security Minister Kiuchi Minoru said: &quot;Currently, there is no event requiring the immediate use of this system. But in order to ensure the safety of people&#039;s lives and livelihoods, we will continue working for a stable supply of goods essential to economic security.&quot;
                
The private sector may be unable to produce key items in uncertain times. Under the law on economic security promotion, the government can step in and take necessary action.
                
Officials say the system will go into effect on Wednesday next week.
