US Senate passes defense bill including assistance for Taiwan NHK

The US Senate has passed a defense bill that includes up to 10 billion dollars in military assistance for Taiwan over the next 5 years.

The Senate approved the fiscal 2023 National Defense Authorization Act, or NDAA, by an overwhelming bipartisan majority on Thursday.

The bill authorizes defense spending of 858 billion dollars, including up to 10 billion dollars from 2023 to 2027 for Taiwan, which faces rising military pressure from China. In addition, it allows the US to provide Taiwan with weapons worth up to 1 billion dollars per fiscal year.

The legislation allocates over 10 billion dollars to a fund to strengthen defense capabilities in the Indo-Pacific region amid China's increasing military presence.

It also provides 800 million dollars in military assistance for Ukraine.

The legislation will take effect after President Joe Biden signs it.
