NHK has learned that a group of parliamentarians from Ukraine are set to visit Japan this weekend. The visit will be the first since Russia's invasion of their country began in late February. They are expected to call on Japan to put more pressure on Russia and seek assistance to help restore infrastructure. The Ukrainian Embassy in Tokyo and other sources say five members of the parliament, including Galyna Mykhailiuk, are to arrive Japan on Saturday. The group plans to meet their Japanese counterparts as well as government officials and members of economic circles. The lawmakers include a former soldier who fought against pro-Russian armed groups in the past and an economic expert. The visit comes with no signs of an end to the bloodshed in Ukraine evident. Russian forces pelted multiple Ukrainian cities with missiles on Wednesday. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been calling on the international community to step up sanctions and mount pressure on Russia. The parliamentarians' visit to Japan is likely aimed at strongly urging the Group of Seven nations to remain united in supporting Ukraine.
