Japan's nuclear regulation officials say they have confirmed that Tokyo Electric Power Company took steps to improve anti-terrorism measures at its Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant. The secretariat of the Nuclear Regulation Authority on Monday presented a draft report on the progress in TEPCO's correction measures at the authority's closed-door meeting. The NRA has effectively banned the utility from running the plant in Niigata Prefecture, on the Sea of Japan coast, after a series of flaws in anti-terrorism measures surfaced in 2021. The secretariat officials say the draft report argues that inspections conducted over the course of two-and-a-half years found improvements in those measures. The draft also says TEPCO is expected to make improvements on its own on steps to prevent a recurrence. In addition to the report, the NRA will conduct an assessment to see whether the utility is competent to operate a nuclear plant as a condition for lifting the ban. The NRA members will discuss the draft report and the assessment at their meeting on Wednesday. After the meeting, they are expected to visit the plant, and interview TEPCO executives, before deciding whether to lift the ban.
