Kabuki actor Ichikawa Sadanji dies NHK

Kabuki actor Ichikawa Sadanji has died. He was known for his versatile acting ability, and was also active on TV.

Kabuki production company Shochiku says Sadanji died of lung cancer on Saturday at the age of 82.

Sadanji was born in Tokyo in 1940 as the first son of Ichikawa Sadanji the third. He made his stage debut in 1947, and became the fourth actor to assume the name of Ichikawa Sadanji in 1979.

Sadanji played a wide range of roles, from villains to humorous characters and females.

He also appeared in TV dramas and variety shows, including NHK's 2007 historical drama series "Furin Kazan."

Sadanji was awarded the Japan Art Academy Prize in fiscal 2016 for his achievements.

Shochiku says he was on stage at the National Theatre until January.
