Japan's health ministry confirmed 133,065 new cases of the coronavirus nationwide on Thursday.
It says 243 people infected with the virus died, including 34 in Hokkaido and 20 in Tokyo. The daily death tally is the highest since September 8, when 261 deaths were reported.
A total of 363 people are reported to be in serious condition, up 17 from Wednesday.
The ministry also reported 14,104 new cases in Tokyo on Thursday, up 1,772 from a week earlier. That marks the third consecutive day of week-on-week increases.
Seventeen people are reportedly in serious condition -- two fewer than on Wednesday.
