Over 790 people dead in Gaza since Israel resumed offensive NHK

Palestinian officials in the Gaza Strip say nearly 800 people have died since the Israeli military resumed a large-scale offensive in the enclave on March 18 amid stalled ceasefire talks.

Gaza's health authorities said on Tuesday that Israeli attacks had left 792 people dead over the past week.

Qatar-based satellite TV station Al Jazeera reported that at least 12 people were killed in an Israeli attack on Jabalia in northern Gaza and elsewhere overnight on Wednesday.

The report said the victims included a mother, her six-month-old baby and four other children.

Israel apparently intends to ramp up its offensive, as its parliament on Tuesday adopted a 2025 state budget that includes record-high defense spending of about 110 billion shekels, or about 30 billion dollars.

Finance minister Bezalel Smotrich said, "This is a budget of war, and with God's help it will be a budget of victory."

Mike Huckabee, who was nominated by US President Donald Trump to be the United States' ambassador to Israel, expressed support for the country.

In a Senate hearing, Huckabee said if Israel were to fall, the United States would be next.
