UN urges Taliban to lift rules on Afghan female staff NHK

The United Nations is urging the Taliban interim government to lift its restrictions on female Afghan staff to speed relief efforts, almost two weeks after a deadly earthquake hit eastern Afghanistan.

The Taliban have barred Afghan women from entering its compounds across the country. UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said Thursday that the rules on local women's movements are "putting at serious risk" essential humanitarian assistance being delivered by the UN in earthquake-affected areas. He called for their immediate removal.

He said the UN has provided food for around 60,000 people and safe water for 30,000, as well as shelters and medicine, but much more is needed. With winter nearing, he appealed for more international assistance.
The magnitude 6.0 quake struck on August 31, killing more than 2,200 people and injuring over 3,600 in hardest-hit Kunar Province. Many affected areas remain cut off as mountain roads have been severed.
