Two 6.3 magnitude earthquakes struck western Afghanistan on Saturday, killing at least 30 people. The United States Geological Survey says the first quake occurred before noon local time, and the second one about 30 minutes later. Several later jolts were also registered. Buildings collapsed in the western province of Herat. Local authorities under the Taliban Islamist group say at least 30 people were killed and more than 500 others injured. These are the latest in a series of major earthquakes to hit Afghanistan. In June of last year, a magnitude 5.9 quake hit the eastern Afghan province of Khost, killing more than 1,000 people.
