An ambulance on active duty was stolen in Machida City, western Tokyo, on Monday night. The Tokyo Fire Department said the vehicle was left parked and ready to drive inside an apartment complex while its crew responded to an emergency call. Investigative sources said the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department received a report at about 8:30 p.m. that day stating that an ambulance seemed to have been stolen. The vehicle was left unlocked with its key in the ignition while emergency staff rushed to the residence that had reportedly placed the emergency call. About 30 minutes later, the vehicle was found roughly six kilometers away from the apartment complex in Hachioji City. Police arrested a man in his 50s who was in the ambulance on suspicion of theft. The man appeared to have acted alone, and no accidents involving the vehicle have been reported so far. No one in the apartment from which the emergency call reportedly originated needed medical care.
