South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has told the international community that he will seek peaceful coexistence and shared growth with North Korea. He also welcomed possible normalization of ties between the United States and North Korea.
Lee made the comments at a speech at the UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday. The speech at the assembly was his first since assuming office.
He said the South Korean government will consistently seek a path to reduce military tensions and restore mutual trust between the two Koreas. He added that Seoul seeks to achieve the goal of peaceful coexistence and shared growth with Pyongyang through a comprehensive approach centered on exchange, normalization and denuclearization.
Admitting that it will be difficult to achieve the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula in the short term, Lee emphasized his vision of a phased solution of stopping North Korea from advancing its nuclear and missile programs, shrinking them and then letting Pyongyang abandon them.
He also said it is important that the international community be involved in achieving peace on the peninsula. The remark apparently reflected Lee's endorsement of normalization of ties between Washington and Pyongyang.
Speaking at a meeting of the Supreme People's Assembly that ended on Sunday, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said if the US drops its obsession with denuclearizing North Korea and wants genuine peaceful coexistence, there is no reason for Pyongyang to not sit down with Washington.
