UN: Rebuilding Gaza requires at least 53 billion dollars NHK

The United Nations says the recovery and reconstruction of the Gaza Strip after devastation by Israeli attacks is estimated to require at least 53.1 billion dollars.

The UN released a report on its interim assessment for the recovery and reconstruction needs for Gaza on Tuesday. It comes after a six-week ceasefire was put in place in Gaza under a deal between Israel and the Palestinian Islamic group Hamas.

The report says more than 60 percent of homes and over 65 percent of roads have been destroyed in the strip. It adds that 88 percent of schools there have been destroyed or damaged.

The UN estimates that more than 50 million tons of debris has been generated in Gaza due to the Israel-Hamas conflict.

It says the massive debris is laced with unexploded ordnance and hazardous materials, making the removal work difficult and costly.

The UN estimates Gaza's recovery and reconstruction needs in the short, medium, and long term will total at least 53.1 billion dollars.

Of them, the needs for the first three years are estimated to be around 20.6 billion dollars.

US President Donald Trump has argued that the United States will own the Gaza Strip over the long term and rebuild it.

The UN maintains the position that a peaceful and just solution to the conflict can only be achieved through two states, Israel and Palestine, living side-by-side in peace and security.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stressed that the Palestinian Authority must be at the center of planning for and the implementation of recovery and reconstruction in Gaza.
