Washington is considering a plan for President Joe Biden to visit the atomic-bombed city of Nagasaki when he visits Japan for the Group of Seven summit next May. Japan will chair the G7 summit in the western city of Hiroshima, which was also hit by an atomic bomb during World War Two. Japan's Prime Minister Kishida Fumio has said he wants to send a powerful message on abolishing nuclear weapons at the summit. Informed sources say Washington made an unofficial offer to have Biden visit Nagasaki to Japan's government. The two sides are expected to discuss the plan while considering the wishes of local residents. Kishida is expected to accompany Biden to Nagasaki if the US president makes the visit. In 2016, former President Barack Obama became the first sitting US president to visit Hiroshima when he was in Japan for the Ise-Shima G7 summit. Atomic bomb survivors have been calling on world leaders to visit Nagasaki while they are in Japan for the Hiroshima summit.
