Seven-Eleven Japan is preparing a trial that will transport some of its products on trains. The goods will be delivered to convenience stores inside rail stations.

The idea is to reduce the retailer's dependence on the trucking industry, which is struggling with a driver shortage.

Deliveries at train stations are usually a burden for truck drivers. The facilities often have inadequate parking, and traffic tends to be heavy on surrounding roads.

Seven-Eleven Japan is teaming up with private rail operator Keio Corporation. The trial begins this week on the Inokashira Line.

Sandwiches, "bento" boxed meals and other chilled items will be transported on trains outside rush hours.

Railway workers will unload the items at three stations including Kichijoji, where the line terminates.

A Seven-Eleven official says the company will promote the use of trains as an alternative to trucking to lighten drivers' workloads.

The retailer hopes to launch trials with other rail operators.
