People across India are celebrating Diwali with fireworks and firecrackers amid growing concern over worsening air pollution. The "festival of lights" marking the start of the Hindu New Year is held in October or November. Lanterns and fairy lights illuminate homes and temples creating a magical atmosphere. Families and friends gather and offer prayers for health, prosperity and good luck in the new year. Delhi's government banned firecrackers in and around the capital to prevent air quality deteriorating, but to little avail. Smog in urban areas worsens at this time of year as the temperature dips, farmers burn stubble and festivalgoers set off pyrotechnics. There is mounting anxiety over its effects on people's health.
