The former head of Taiwan&#039;s second largest opposition political party has criticized the investigation into corruption charges against him after being released on bail.
        
                    
                  
Ko Wen-je, the former chairman of the Taiwan People&#039;s Party, or TPP, was freed from detention on Monday after posting bail of 70 million New Taiwan dollars, or about 2.3 million US dollars.
        
                    
                  
He was indicted last December on charges of accepting more than 17 million New Taiwan dollars, or over 550,000 US dollars, in bribes for a construction project while serving as Taipei mayor. He was the city&#039;s mayor until 2022.
        
                    
                  
Ko spoke to reporters after he was released. He claimed he was wrongly charged and reiterated his innocence. Ko also strongly condemned the administration of President Lai Ching-te, saying the ruling Democratic Progressive Party is trying to divide Taiwan.
        
                    
                  
Lai has faced difficulty running the government as the largest opposition party Kuomintang and the TPP have a majority in Taiwan&#039;s parliament.
