Russian journalist Alexander Nevzorov has been sentenced in absentia to eight years in prison. A court in Moscow said on Wednesday that he spread "false information" about the military. Nevzorov is critical of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. He has been releasing reports from outside Russia, using YouTube and other means. Russia's state-run news agency and other media say Nevzorov claimed Russian forces deliberately attacked a hospital in Mariupol, eastern Ukraine, last year. Reports also say Russian authorities indicted him, saying his claim was false. The court said Nevzorov will be jailed if he returns to Russia, while the journalist said on social media on Wednesday that he has no intention of doing so. An independent media outlet in Russia reports authorities had recognized 180 criminal cases of dissemination of false information about the Russian military by December 1. Observers say that indicates authorities are concerned about reports critical of the government.
