US President Donald Trump has ordered a new review of Nippon Steel's plan to acquire US Steel. Trump on Monday signed a document instructing the Committee on Foreign Investment in the US to conduct the review to help Trump determine "whether further action in this matter may be appropriate". The last time the committee reviewed the proposal, it failed to reach consensus and referred the final decision to then president Joe Biden. Biden blocked the deal in January, citing national security concerns. Trump gave the committee 45 days to submit a recommendation on whether measures proposed by parties concerned, including Nippon Steel, are "sufficient to mitigate any national security risks identified by CFIUS." Experts say it's quite rare for the committee to review the same case again. A new CFIUS review won't be bound by previous decisions. Nippon Steel has been seeking to take over US Steel and turn it into a subsidiary. However, Trump has said "Nobody can have a majority stake for US Steel."
